Bowls, blunts, bongs – where do we begin?! Everyone has their favorite way of smoking, but if you’re looking to spice up your routine – read on, we’ve got you covered.

Smoking Cannabis Flower

If you’re having a smoke-sesh with friends, you might point to the designated joint-roller of the group. Maybe they’ll roll up something to pass around. Or, if you’re like me, you reach for that tall glass beauty, drop a few ice cubes in and take a couple pulls off your favorite bong.

No matter what your favorite “piece” is, smoking is said to be one of the best ways to consume CBD flower.

In this new series – Piece by Piece, we’ll be breaking down some of our favorite pieces and sharing our experiences with you. This week, we’re taking a closer look at bowls (or pipes, if you’re a mid-18th century Englishman).

Bowls are great for quick concealing. It’s easy to tuck these lil’ guys away in your pocket or in an on-the-go stash box. Also they’re usually pretty durable. Even glass bowls can withstand a fair amount of bumps and bruises.

More on glass, it’s crucial to find quality, hand-blown glass pipes from reputable manufacturers. If you go with a cheap, $5 bowl you might be okay, but there could be small shards of glass or dust that break loose from the chamber and, while it probably goes without saying, smoking shards of glass is not good for you.

Beyond the glass versions, pipes can be made from a variety of different materials. A popular variety is silicone bowl, as many are dishwasher safe and very durable. Oftentimes silicon pipes come with interchangeable filters. This ensures you have a nice clean toke every time you smoke!

My personal favorite type of pipe material is ceramic. They’re harder to find and a little more expensive but hey, you’re spending the money anyway, right? (Psst….don’t tell my bank account!). Ceramic bowls are nice for a couple of reasons. Mainly, they’re made from terracotta which is just about as natural as you can get. Also you can’t help but feel just a wee bit cooler than everyone else when people ask, “hey, woah, what kinda bowl you got there?”. You get to smile smugly and say “…it’s ceramic.”

Bowls can also be wooden, which is another great way to get that natural. They offer an almost smoky, taste out of your flower. Wooden bowls, like their glass cousins, can sometimes be cheaply made and therefore exposed to harmful chemicals and varnishes.

Scared of all the cheap pipes but not sure if you want to throw down a pretty penny for a good quality piece? Well, if you have the skill, you can always make a pipe out of an apple or pear…but, we wouldn’t recommend eating it after.

Consuming Rosin Cannabis Concentrate

  • For starters, rosin is made without solvents such as alcohol or butane. It is created through heat and pressure applied to cannabis plant material or hash. Resin, when used to describe a concentrate, is a cannabis extract created with a solvent.

How is Rosin made?

Rosin can be made from either cannabis flower or hash, which is the collected kief (trichomes) of the Cannabis plant. If you have a grinder with a kief catch, you are probably already familiar! Rosin made from cannabis nugs tends to be slightly more difficult to enjoy, as plant matter almost always impacts the rosin. This does not impede the rosin’s potency but can cause an unpleasant flavor or smell for the user.

Once the cannabis source material is chosen, heat and pressure are applied. Most rosin for sale in dispensaries is created in a custom industrial press, though some users choose to make their own rosin at home with a hair straightener.

The applied heat and pressure to the cannabis material force out the cannabinoids and terpenes, similar to how canola or olives are pressed for oil. The end result is a cannabis concentrate with THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids as well as terpenes. The temperature and pressure applied correlate to the type of rosin produced. Rosin can be made into shatter, budder, taffy, and wax consistencies.
