The District of Columbia has a booming culture for cannabis enthusiasts. Buying anything from Delta 8 THC to CBD oil in Washington DC is easy with so many dispensaries and specialty stores selling different CBD products.

Whether you’re a frequent smoker or a casual user, it’s a pain to not know how to get cannabis in DC. In this article, we’ll cover the regulations around cannabis in the country’s capital city and point you to the best deals on quality CBD online and locally.

IS CBD LEGAL IN WASHINGTON, DC?

Yes. CBD, hemp derivatives, and extracts are legal in Washington, DC. The Hemp Farming Act of 2018 legalizes their propagation, sale, distribution, and consumption. Furthermore, hemp and its derivatives and extracts are considered agricultural products.

Under the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, hemp and industrial hemp are supplemental and alternative crops. As such, they’re regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). They can be mass-produced, researched, developed, and insured following the rules issued by USDA.

Hemp-derived products are legal as long as the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of these products is not more than 0.3% THC.

IS MARIJUANA LEGAL IN WASHINGTON, DC?

Yes. Marijuana is legal in Washington, DC.

It’s a Schedule I drug according to federal law. However, local laws contradict federal regulations.

Marijuana is legal to possess for personal use only according to the Legalization of Possession of Minimal Amounts of Marijuana for Personal Use Initiative of 2014.

Initiative 71 of Washington DC provides that it is legal to possess marijuana for personal use if the possessor is at least 21 years old and up, to transfer it to another person without monetary consideration, to grow six plants at a time, and to possess paraphernalia such as pipes, bongs, and rolling papers.

However, it is not legal to sell or buy marijuana for personal and recreational use and use it publicly.

For medicinal marijuana, it’s legal to buy provided that the buyer is a participant of the Medical Marijuana Program. To avail of such a program, they must possess a valid patient registration card for medical marijuana. You can now self-certify yourself in the District of Columbia.

IS DELTA 8 THC LEGAL IN WASHINGTON DC?

Yes. Delta 8 THC is legal in Washington DC.

Although not mentioned in the Hemp Farming Act of 2018, it is not included in the restricted list. Delta 8 THC is a naturally derived tetrahydrocannabinol, and as such, it is not a Schedule I drug. Hence, Delta 8 THC is legal for both recreational and medical purposes.

Delta 8 is likely to stay legal in Washington D.C., especially because the DEA made statements in 2021 saying that hemp-derived delta 8 is not a controlled substance.

Until that happens, local legislators are unlikely to reclassify delta-8 THC as marijuana since you won’t be able to access it without any available licensed retailers.

CAN YOU BUY DELTA 8 THC IN WASHINGTON DC?

Absolutely! Back in 2018, hemp became federally legal after the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill. Since the authorization of this bill, states have created their own legal framework that would comply with federal law, and today, most states have legalized it as well.

When the United States Congress legalized hemp on a federal level, it pertained to DC too. Although Washington D.C. is not a state, according to the Constitution, the United States Congress has ultimate authority over DC. Therefore, hemp is legal there too. As of October 19, 2021, all derivatives and cannabinoids of hemp, including CBD, Delta 8 THC, and Delta 9 THC, are federally legal.

HOW TO FIND QUALITY CANNABIS PRODUCTS IN WASHINGTON DC

Shopping for CBD, Delta 8 THC, and marijuana in Washington, DC is easy; the capital city has many specialty stores selling products in different forms. However, the market is largely unregulated when it comes to quality standards, so if this is going to be your first order, it’s important to do your homework beforehand.

Here’s how you can protect yourself from companies selling fake or low-quality cannabis products.

  • Choose products produced with quality materials. Cannabis plants are bio accumulators, meaning they can absorb everything from the environment they grow in. The best cannabis in Washington, DC is made with organic, non-GMO flower.
  • Full-spectrum is superior to isolates. Unlike isolates, full-spectrum products are made using the entire cannabis plant, capturing more beneficial compounds. These compounds include minor cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, all of which boost the efficacy of cannabis, allowing the body to process it quickly and better. This phenomenon is known as “the entourage effect” and doesn’t occur with isolate-based products.
  • Only purchase from companies that send their products for third-party testing. An independent laboratory should be able to determine whether the cannabis potency in your product matches the advertised potency. It can also tell you if there are any contaminants, such as heavy metals, pesticides, or solvents. Reputable companies make the results from the lab analysis available on their website or upon request.
  • Avoid brands making unrealistic claims about cannabis. Cannabis can do many great things for your health, but it’s not a miracle drug that will cure cancer or any disease for that matter. If you see a company making such claims, it’s more than likely a scam.

How is Rosin made?

Rosin can be made from either cannabis flower or hash, which is the collected kief (trichomes) of the Cannabis plant. If you have a grinder with a kief catch, you are probably already familiar! Rosin made from cannabis nugs tends to be slightly more difficult to enjoy, as plant matter almost always impacts the rosin. This does not impede the rosin’s potency but can cause an unpleasant flavor or smell for the user.

Once the cannabis source material is chosen, heat and pressure are applied. Most rosin for sale in dispensaries is created in a custom industrial press, though some users choose to make their own rosin at home with a hair straightener.

The applied heat and pressure to the cannabis material force out the cannabinoids and terpenes, similar to how canola or olives are pressed for oil. The end result is a cannabis concentrate with THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids as well as terpenes. The temperature and pressure applied correlate to the type of rosin produced. Rosin can be made into shatter, budder, taffy, and wax consistencies.
