Cannabis Edibles

So you like edibles, but you’re constantly finding yourself disappointed with the dosage or flavors in them. I mean, how many times can you unwrap and cut up a 500mg chocolate bar that’s been in your fridge for a month? Probably only a few times before it either loses its potency or just goes bad.

That’s why more and more people are finding ways to craft their own edible experience by making their own concentrated cannabis oil to infusion into any food they like. It starts with just a few essential materials and a ton of patience.

You can use any type of raw cannabis flower (CBD, THC, D8-THC, etc.)

By using an extraction method called decarboxylation to naturally pull those cannabinoids out of the flower and convert them into a form acceptable by an infusion medium like butter, oil or even, in some cases, milk.

We’ll be infusing our CBD into coconut oil but it is good to know you can use any medium that has some fat in it. This is because many cannabinoids (including THC), are fat-soluble and cannot bind to substances without fat.

Making edibles from raw buds is super simple.

But it does require some hands-on involvement. As mentioned above, the decarboxylation process takes about ½ hour – an hour alone, then the infusion process takes about double that. So clear your calendar (and your kitchen) the day you plan to make your delicious edibles!

Supplies for making edibles

Before we dive into the details, let’s go over some prerequisites you’ll need:

  1. An oven – this one might seem like a given, but you can’t decarb your flower in a microwave or toaster oven
  2. A mason jar or large glass container with oven-proof lid – you’ll need a thick glass container like a mason jar or Pyrex container. Just be sure the lid is oven proof!
  3. Flower – Duh! To make edibles from raw bud you need…well, raw flower! Lucky for you, we have a ton of it!
  4. Coconut oil – any type of coconut oil will do, and feel free to use any fatty liquid like butter, milk or even olive oil. We just like coconut oil because it’s pretty much tasteless!

Depending on how much you’re looking to make, your total time will vary.

For this recipe, we’re making 1000mg of CBD infused coconut oil.

If you’d like to make half this recipe, chop everything we have below in half (except the amount of coconut oil, leave that at 1 cup!)

  • Step 1: Separate/Measure
    • Preheat your oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit
    • Take out your Flowerz CBD nugs and weigh out 10 grams – include stems and any loose shake if you like
    • Place the measured flower into the mason jar or glass container. Leave the mason jar lid slightly ajar. Do NOT completely seal the lid
  • Step 2: Decarboxylation
    • With your measured flower and preheated oven, place the mason jar upright on a baking sheet
    • Bake for 25-30min, then, with an oven mitt, take the mason jar out and give it a good shake around. The buds should look slightly brown or a darker shade of green
    • While your flowers are decarbing, bring about 3 cups of water to a boil in a medium-sized pot
    • Bake for another 15-20min, or until nugs turn brown
Making Cannabis Edibles is easier than you think!
  • Step 3: Infusion
    • In your boiled water, place a metal colander or strainer in the center of the pot
      • Any heat-safe item will work – you just don’t want your mason to touch the bottom of the pot!
    • Add 1 cup of coconut oil to the same mason jar your cannabis is in, then reseal the lid
*note: seal the lid completely this time!*
  • Place the mason jar in the boiling water
  • Let mason jar sit for about 45 minutes to an hour
  • After the coconut oil turns a Hulk-like green, take the mason jar out and set on a heat-resistant surface to cool

*note: this recipe makes 1 cup of 1000mg infused coconut oil – every teaspoon equates to about 20mg of pure CBD infused oil – measure and consume responsibly

  • Step 4: Cook
    • Add these 20mg/tsp doses to any food you like! Try dropping a teaspoon or two into our morning coffee to take away those morning jitters or maybe a tablespoon in your next family dinner!
  • Step 5: Eat!
    • Enjoy your next infused dish!
